Carbon fibers have attracted the interest of research due to their unique properties including high tensile strength and stiffness, low density, high electrical conductivity and good flexibility [1]. In the recent years, research has focused on reducing their manufacturing cost by utilizing alternative raw materials, especially natural polymers such as lignin that come from biorenewable resources. Lignin is the second most abundant natural polymer behind cellulose and the most important renewable source of aromatic structures on Earth [2]. It is a low-cost raw material obtained as a major by-product of paper industry [2].
