It is easy to specify an oversized fuse for a varistor-based surge suppression system. This happens when the value of current extracted from a varistor surge rating curve is too large. The result is a fuse that doesn't adequately protect from and explosion when the varistor becomes saturated.Too small a fuse will blow prematurely and too large a fuse won't protect properly,so it is essential to conduct tests to find the right size. This paper shows how curves are used to obtain a starting point for experimentally determining the proper size of the fuse.
