The Federal Aviation Administration's Air Traffic Safety Oversight Service

In March 2005, the FAA Administrator signed an FAA Order 1100.161 that required the Air Traffic Organization to develop and employ, no later than 5 years from the signature date of the Order, a safety management system to be used in all safety decisions relating to Air Traffic Services. This same FAA Order "stood up" the Air Traffic Safety Oversight Service (AOV) within the Office of the Associate Administrator of Aviation Safety. This presentation will outline the who, what, why, when, where and how of this office as it relates to the oversight of the Air Traffic Operational and Management (ATM) System and the components that enable the ATM system to operate at the highest level of safety.
