pneumonia in finisher pigs, caused by different pathogenic organisms such as Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Pasteureila multocida and Actinobacillus pieuronpneumonia, causes considerable losses in modem swine production. Antibiolic treatments together with attention to the environment in which animals are kepi and the management profile are prominent tools in the control of the disease complex. Tilmicosin, a new dmg with excellent in vitro MIC data and pharmacokinetic properties appears to have a profile that would make it suitable as a therapeutic for the above respiratory pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of tilmicosin on pneumonia in pigs compared with the efficacy of a similar treatment regime with an already registered drug (Terramycin soluble powder, oxytetracycline 20 percent), known to be effective against mycoplasma and other bacterial respiratory diseases. The herd is a finisher-unit with 40 pens (approx. 13 pigs per pen), 2/3 concrete and 1/3 slatted floor. Dryfeeder automates, two drinking nipples per pen. The recent disease history Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Mycoplasma hypneumoniae, Pasteureila multocida, PRRS. Pneumonia has been the main reason for treating pigs in the herd (incidence: 16 percent over the last 244 days).
