Absence of adverse effects on boar fertility of vaccination with a live, recombinant, oil-in-water Adjuvanted aujeszky's disease vaccine (Suvaxyn 783+o/w)

According to the mandatory vaccination regime for the control of Aujesxky's Disease in The Netherlands, breeding sows and boars are revaccinated every four months. The safely of a vaccine has to be demonstrated in each category of animals which it isintended for. Therefore, we have investigated the absence of adverse effects on boar fertility. Semen quality data collected before and after vaccination were collected at a commercial swine AI station. 2069 ejaculates from 114 boars collected between 28 November 1996 and 21 February 1997 were analysed. The effect of vaccination on fertility was evaluated by comparing averages of the following parameters before and after vaccination: 1. sperm quality score (including progressive forward motility, morphology and acrosomal integrity of spermatozoa); 2. motility (percentage motile spermatozoa); 3. number of doses per ejaculate.
