Swine veterinarians often use chlortetracycline (CTC) or oxytetracycline (OTC) to control or treat swine respiratory disease, and many still view the two antibiotics as interchangeable, despite substantial evidence to the contrary.1"5 The Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab susceptibility test results for CTC and OTC for several important swine respiratory pathogens, including Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Actinobacillus suis and Pasteurella multocida, were summarized for 2003-2006. These pathogens are some of the more commonly isolated bacteria from cases of swine pneumonia submitted to the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab.
