A weight reduction could be achieved through a coupling of the VAFN and TRU AS. The presented work focussed on the coupling of the two systems TRU and VAFN with one actuator system, depicts the design approach and assesses the final concept design in terms of weight, complexity and safety. It is the first paper which shows a design approach considering certification requirements and safety analysis right from the beginning of an academic concept study. Furthermore all known related advantages and disadvantages of such a system are summarised. The work done focusses on an UHBPR aero engine application with the use of the TRU on ground only, VAFN anytime and does only include the AS, not the detailed TRU or VAFN design. The papers purpose is to give a view on a close to industrial design approach with academically background. It emphasises the challenges of a coupled TRU and VAFN AS and describes a feasible solution at a proof of concept stage (TRL 3).
