An experimental study on supersonic combustion behaviors of fuel mixtures of methane and ethylene was conducted using a scramjet model combustor with a cavity flame holder. The effect of fuel composition, the equivalence ratio, and total temperature of main flow on supersonic combustion were investigated. The concentration of ethylene was varied in 10% increment. Total temperature was varied from 1800 K to 2200 K. The measurement of CH chemiluminescence was performed. The results indicated that the flame holding ability varies with the total temperature and the composition of the fuel, not with equivalence ratio. There seemed to be a lower limit of ethylene concentration between the success and failure of flame holding. Also, two types of ignition mode were observed with high speed video camera. Ignition delay was likely to strongly affect the flame holding.
