Isolation and characterisation of forty-eight fluorinated derivatives of 70fullerene: the ultimate hplc separation?

From 100 mg of the product of fluorination of [70]fullerene with MnF_3, we have isolated forty-eight components by HPLC and characterised them by mass spectrometry, and by IR and ~(19)F NMR spectroscopy (where quantities permitted). They comprise numerous isomers of C_(70)F_(44), C_(70)F_42, C_(70)F_40, C_(70)F_38, C_(70)F_36, C_(70)F_34, C_(70)F_40O, C_(70)F_28O, C_(70)F_36PO, C_(70)F_O_2, C_(70)F_35O.OH, C_(70)F_37.O.OH, and C_(70)F_34O_3. A component that eluted just before one of the C_(70)F_38 isomers, was idicted by its mass spectrum it to be C_(70)F_37 but is probably an exceptionally stable fragment produced by degradation of an oxide precursor, a view supported by temperature-degradation studies. One each of C_(70)F_42, C_(70)F_38, C_(70)F_36 isomers, at least two C_(70)F_40 isomers, and C_(70)F_34O_3 have C_s (or C_2) symmetry, all the other components have C_1 symmetry. The main components are two C_(70)F_38 isomers (nos. 8 and 14). Other components detected in trace amounts were C_(70)F_39O.OH, the poly-epoxides C_(70)F_36O, C_(70)F_36O_2 and C_(70)F_36O_3 and the poly-epoxy dihydroxides, C_(70)F_30O_2(OH)_2, C_(70)F_30O_3(OH)_2, and C_(70)F_30O_4(OH)_2.
