This paper reports on early work on the application of a digital media management environment to promote story writing for young children (5-6 years old) within a normal school classroom. The overall aim of the project and the methodology for making further progress are briefly described. In particular, a user centred approach known as participatory design is taken which exploits pedagogical claims analysis. The issue of supporting story writing within a novel classroom environment is addressed by describing the (non-intelligent) core software. Some further work outlining how pedagogical agents may provide active support are outlined which broadly follow a learner centred design approach [1].
