In this paper we present the first results of the EU-ESPRIT Project Colombo focused on the application of parallel computers to the simulation of the complex phenomena occurring in the bioremediation of contaminated soils. In Colombo, discrete models (i.e. Cellular Automata) are used, instead of the more classical approach based on partial differential equations. In fact, cellular automata are intrinsically parallel and they can be easily and "naturally" implemented on parallel computers of the MIMD type. This approach has been already applied to describe bioremediation of a phenol contaminated soil in a previous ESPRIT project, named Caboto. In this paper we present the main theoretical characteristics of the Caboto/Colombo simulation models and the results of some comparisons between experimental and simulation data.
