This paper proposes a new method for manufacturing short metal fibers in which a rotary tool with a V-shaped notch formed on the outer peripheral cutting edge is used on a turning machine for cutting a long flow type machined chip into short fibers of predetermined length. It is confirmed by experiments that short and thin metal fibers of materials like SS400 and SUS304 may be produced successfully by selecting appropriate machining conditions such as slant angle, cutting speed, feed and depth of cut.
