Increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections HIV-1 disease results mainly from the progressive loss of memory CD4 T-cell reactivity Th1 cell functions against recall antigens.previous studies have shown that monotherapy with zidovudine or ritonavir results in a slght or transient improvement in CD4 T-cell function only when such function is detectable before the onset of therapy; research to date has implied that the loss of CD4-cell reactivity may be irreversible at advanced stages of the disease.
