Design and start up of the 1-strand slab Caster #5 at VOEST-ALPINE Stahl Linz

On April 1, 1995, the VA TECH consortium consisting of VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau GmbH (VAI), VA-MCE and EBG was awarded a contract from VOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ (VASL) for the installation of a 1-strand slab caster, including bay construction, erection and modification of the slab finishing area as well as the water treatment facilities. The new Single Strand Slab Caster #5 at VASL represents one of the most advanced slab casters installed worldwide, features the following technological highlights: flexible hydraulic oscillation, the unique I-STAR Rollers, a dynamic secondary cooling system (DYNACS~R) as well as a highly sophisticated Computer-Aided Quality Control System (CAQC). Considering the reduced number of operator stations and an optimized number of highy skilled operating personnel, this caster also represents a notable step towards fully remote casting.
