The damaging effect of light on the retina has received considerable attention. Visual loss associated with sungazing has been reported- since the time of Plato, eclipse watching being the major cause of solar retinopathy. It has also been described in sunbathers, pilots, military recruits, in patients with mental illness and following religious rituals1,2. The aim of this 8-year case-control study was to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of solar retinopathy in a group of patients, who during the same religious ritual gazed at the sun in the effort to witness an apparition.
