Surgical treatment of idiopathic macular holes is recommended by many authors and found to be effective and beneficial. The user of laser treatment for macular holes has been suggested a few times in the ophthalmic literature but was not accepted as a routine procedure because of the low successful rate of visual acuity improvement.This study evaluated the effect of laser treatment on full thickness macular holes and examined the topographical changes of the macular surface using the confocal laser tomograph (Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph, Heidelberg Engineering, HRT, Germany following laser treatment. The study was conducted to answer whether laser treatment has any beneficial results compared with the natural history of the disease, and whether one can offer laser treatment for idiopathic full thickness macular holes in selected cases when vitreous surgery cannot be performed.
