The issue of national unification in Korea never fails to draw some attention from almost every sector in the society. It indeed is a ht issue. It can easily arouse strong emotional sentiments, and nobody would dare openly deny that the nation must reunite. nonetheless, among the younger generation in the South, thereare some who implicitly hold the view that we may not have to reunify at all since we in th south are doing fine under the circumstances. others overtly reject any rash move to reintegrate on the ground that the burden on the south would be much graater and more painful than that borne by West germany in hte process of German reunification. And yet, Korea has millions of separated families whose lifelong wish has been to reunite with the family members on the other side. Despite the half century of ideological cleavage on top of spatical segregatoin between the two, thereis one song quite popular among the general populace in both sides, which is always sung whenever people from both sides meet, and it is no accident that this song happens to be one wishing that we be united even in our dreams.
