The eclectic field of complementary and alternative or holistic veterinary medicine is comprised of many different modalities. Phytotherapy is one of the major areas that has been evaluated in a scientific manner. Phytotherapeutics, also commonly known as botanical medicine, has been used by numerous cultures for centuries in the treatment of many varied conditions. Phytotherapeutics were normally dispensed by individuals trained in the use of these herbs. Only recently have veterinarians had the opportunity to receive advanced training in the use of medicinal herbs. Phytotherapeutics are being utilized in veterinary medicine much more frequently these days. It is essential that veterinarians receive further training in the use of herbs in veterinary medicine. There are literally hundreds of different herbs that are used in the treatment of animals. Herbal medicine has been found to help treat acute diseases such as infectious diseases in addition to chronic conditions such as hepatopathies and renal disease.
