摘要

Over the past few years there has been a great and growing interest in the promotion of "sustainability" and "sustainable cities" The work in these fields fall largely into two categories: Sustainability Theory and Sustainability Practice. This is a classification which is also reflected in the ASES "call for papers'' In some respects it is a mistake to separate the two realms, as practical work which is weak in theory may forge ahead without understanding or being responsible for its longer term, potentially unsustainable consequences, while theoretical work not directed toward practice may find itself projecting principles or proposals which would be impossible to achieve. This paper describes a project whose strategy is the union of theory and practice. The project, which recently won a citation in the AIA/UIA Sustainable Community Solutions Competition, involves the restoration of a small, partially abandoned medieval village in the region of Umbria, Italy- a poor agricultural region between Rome and Florence with a rich artistic and urbanistic heritage. The restored "borgo" is to become the center for a regional program of agricultural tourism. The restoration will demonstrate the medieval trades, crafts and agriculture, with an emphasis on the regenerative, sustainable relationships that were the essence of the medieval way of life. But the medieval sustainable village wouldn't be truly medieval, nor would it be sustainable, as it would contain all the conveniences necessary to operate a modem public facility. To complete the cycle of sustainability as we bring the medieval village into the present, our proposal is to create a Sustainable Village Implantation (SVI) adjacent to the existing medieval village but apart from its visual landscape. This implantation will be a supporting village with a symbiotic relation to the existing village. The SVI, through its agriculture and its technological implants, will provide all the energy, the food and the infrastructure to create modem regenerative cycles which will rebalance the now modem village. To generate and regulate these cycles a Scientific-Design study is carried out which assembles a large number of agricultural. renewable energy and infrastructure modules in a CAD/GIS based modeling system, whereby many different combinations of these various modules may be explored. As larger families of these modules and models are developed within the computer, this sustainability generating process becomes available for other larger villages and cities to use as the basis of an expanding, participatory process by which the entire region may eventually.
