THE USE OF MEDIUM VOLATILE COALS IN THE COKING BLEND AT THE BURNS HARBOR PLANT OF BETHLEHEM STEEL CORPORATION

Using a coal blend that contains low, medium, and high volatile coal types at the Bums Harbor coke plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation has resulted in both improved coke yield and coke quality from the existing facilities at normal operating conditions. Coke stability and size have increased while the coke sulfur, ash, and reactivity levels have decreased. The blast furnace operations have been superior and iron production has been at record rates.
