While bibliographic database systems are commonly available for the search and retrieval of citations, it is still difficult and time-consuming to follow this up with the physical delivery of the actual documents or document surrogates. This usually entails the physical retrieval of the paper documents from the shelves, physically photocopying the documents and mailing the photocopies, all of which cause delays in the user receiving the requested documents. This session describes ongoing R&D in automated document delivery systems at the National Library of Medicine, the National Agricultural Library, the Research Libraries Group and AT&T Bell Laboratories. The speakers cover system design issues in storing the document images on optical disks, accessing the images from remote locations, automatically retrieving them and transmitting them via fax or Internet.
