The neurotoxin released by DDT and deltamethrin-poisoned cockroaches, Pleriplaneta americana, was identified with TLC and HPLC as tyramine. Tyramine is a normal constituent, present in small amounts in the insect, yet it will produce abnormal physiological effects, such as blockage of nerve conduction, when in excess, Octopamine was found to increase also, in lesser amounts than tyramine, by treatment with DDT and deltamethrin. Other neurotoxic insecticides which produce extreme excitation, and continuous electrical stimulation, will also cause the production of these neuractive substances.
