In conjunction with the construction of the Sagamore Parkway Bridge in West Lafayette, Indiana, a 26-inch-diameter, 100-ft-long, open-ended pipe pile was driven and load tested at the construction site to provide guidance for the foundation design. The soil profile mainly consists of sand-gravel mixtures with gravel content as high as 40—60% at certain depths. The test pile was densely instrumented with a combination of vibrating-wire and electrical-resistance strain gauges. A double-wall instrumentation scheme was used, as it allows independent measurements of the inner shaft resistance from the soil plug and outer shaft resistance. This paper presents the test results in terms of the plug measurement, load-settlement response, development of the plug, annulus and shaft resistances, and profile of the inner and outer unit shaft resistance. The complete dataset consisting of full characterization of soil profile and detailed pile resistance measurements provides great value for the development of the design methods for open-ended pipe piles driven in gravelly sands.
