Energy production is challenged by carbon emission reduction and energy conservation at a time when household demand in energy is in constant evolution. Improving energy management at end users' level is becoming an increasing topic. By providing them with feedback on energy consumption with the details on each appliance consumption, a better plan can be adopted to save energy. NILM - Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring is a growing concept that focuses on methods to disaggregate total energy load and provides statistics about every appliance consumption. In this paper, we present a general NILM framework based on Load Monitoring and disaggregation methods, then review publicly available data sets for home energy management. Besides, we discuss challenges that actuals solutions are facing and provide suggestions for future works.
