This document is intended to provide recommended guidelines on the use of mixed systems primarily for: 1. Light Framed Residential, Multi-family Buildings not greater than 50 feet in height and not exceeding four stories. 2. Low Rise Commercial/Retail Buildings not greater than 35 feet in height and not exceeding two stories. Mixed lateral resisting systems include combining steel lateral resisting systems (e.g. OMFs, OCBFs, etc.) with plywood shear walls, masonry shear walls, concrete shear walls, concrete moment frames, proprietary systems, etc. This guideline introduces the use of Supplemental Lateral Resisting Systems in addition to the Primary Lateral Resisting Systems in order to control torsion and displacement effects. This recommended guideline is not required if alternative lateral-force procedures, using rational analysis based on well-establish principals of mechanics, are used as permitted by UBC Section 1629.10.1. This document represents the opinions of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California's Steel Committee (SEAOSC-STC) based upon several meetings over the course of more than two years. This document has received preliminary reviews by other SEAOSC and SEAOC committees but has not been endorsed by these committees at the time of writing. Therefore, the document represents the opinions of the SEAOSC Steel Committee only and does not represent the opinions of SEAOSC or SEAOC.
