This paper presents an implementation of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing platform for Wide Area Special Protection System in TNB using OPAL-RT real-time simulator which capable to simulate a large-scale power system using phasor-type simulation. The hardware-in-the-loop testing configuration is increasingly recognized as an effective approach to accelerate integration and verification testing of the new developed system and also has been widely used to facilitate developing laboratory experiments. With the help of HIL simulation, interactions with other protection and control systems can be easily analyzed and tested with a variety of system stress scenario and fault conditions in the power system. The result from the test system shows that the implementation of this comprehensive HIL testing platform will significantly reduce the time required to discover the design issue and enabling any remedial action to be determined and applied immediately by the design engineer to the current system design. Thereby, reducing the risk of design errors and increase the statistical confidence in the new designed protection system.
