Normally the head field is calculated without considering the influence of the recording layer, causing some inaccuracies in some occasions [1-3]. In this work we describe the writing process on a permeable perpendicular recording medium from both a simple reluctance analysis and complete micromagnetic simulations. The pertinent discussion is given on the correlation between the deep gap field and the magnetization state of a recording medium. It was found that: (i) The initial writing field is always reduced in perpendicular recording scheme. And the head field rise-time could be somewhat prolonged in the presence of the permeable recording media, (ii) The writing field at saturation could be enhanced up to 10-20%. (iii) The writing field gradient in the presence of ferromagnetic media will be enhanced in some degree in general.
