Efficient Work Zone Traffic Control/Maintenance and Protection of Traffic in Urban Work Zones - Balancing Competing Stakeholders' Needs

The New York State Department of Transportation has undertaken the construction of the new Kosciuszko Bridge (K-Bridge), the largest Design-Build project in the history of NYSDOT. The bridge carries the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (1-278) over Newtown Creek and connects the two New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. The existing bridge carries three lanes of traffic in each direction and experiences congestion for most hours of the day. Once complete, the new bridge will be a cable-stayed Bridge with wider lanes, standard shoulders, and additional lanes in both directions. It will also feature a significantly reduced road grade which will improve traffic safety, reduce congestion, and improve travel speeds on this segment of Ⅰ-278.
