Overview of fault detection and identification for non-linear dynamic systems

There has been considerable interest in fault detection and identification in recent years. The consequence of faults can be extremely serious for safety-critical systems. Early indication of faults can help avoid drastic conditions occurrence such as system breakdown, mission abortion and catastrophes. Consequently, there is a growing demand for fault tolerance and process monitoring which can be achieved not only by improving the individual reliabilities of the functional units but also by efficient fault detection and isolation (FDI) methods. Modelling techniques and model-based fault diagnosis methods are analyzed and discussed in the paper.
