Wastewater reuse has become more important over the years. Ultrafiltration (UF) is a keyprocess in multiple applications of wastewater reuse including Reverse Osmosis (RO)pretreatment. The importance of UF is essentially the complete removal of solids. UF systemsproduce permeate with low Silt Density Index (SDI) and can reduce Total Organic Carbon(TOC) and phosphorous (P) with coagulant addition.This paper will discuss the pilot test results of UF treated wastewater effluent from a lagoonwastewater plant in New Hampshire. The pilot uses a new pressurized hollow fiber UF cartridge.The membrane cartridge is designed to produce high quality permeate at low fouling rates withdifficult feed water.The membrane cartridge was able to handle high coagulant doses to produce excellent permeatequality. The coagulant dose was adjusted to both reduce permeate Total Organic Carbon (TOC)and control membrane pore plugging. An on-line UV254 monitor was used to control thecoagulant rate in order to maintain permeate TOC levels as the feed water quality changed. Thepermeate could be used for direct reuse or as RO feed to reduce dissolved solids.
