PARTICIPATORY GIS - A TECHNOLOGICAL MANEUVER TO P ROMOTE PARTICIPATORY AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT

Mapping local knowledge bases along with spatial mapping had yielded great interest in theform of Participatory-GIS (PGIS) in developing and developed nations in the recent years.Geographic Information Systems (GIS) itself had been playing signifi cant role in land useplanning and water scheduling rationale. Still GIS from its technology viewpoint has beenunable to extend its functionality in conciliation of major social constraints with Participatorymanagement. A novel frame to GIS as ‘Participatory GIS’, by incorporating various forms ofcommunity participation is substantiating its ability to fi ll the gaps missed out in its technicalenvelop. It explores aspects of the control and ownership of geographical information,representations of local and indigenous knowledge, scale and scaling up, web-basedapproaches and some potential future technical and academic directions. To substantiate thesame, a study has been attempted to execute PGIS at village level in Ponnaniyar reservoirsystem at Tamilnadu, India.
