SECURING WATER FOR FOOD AND RURAL COMMUNITY UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is an added stressor on the increasingly complex and interlinked issues of ruraldevelopment, food security under demographic changes, and overstretched environmentaland natural resources. According to IPCC AR5, the major impacts of climate change in ruralareas will be felt through impacts on water supply, food security and agricultural incomes. Moststudies conclude that climate change impacts will be substantial, especially for developingcountries due to geographical locations and because rural population suffer from low adaptivecapacities. These climate-related hazards act as threat multipliers, often with negativeoutcomes for rural livelihoods due to their economic dependence on agriculture and naturalresources. AR5 observed that climate variability, climate change, and increased incidents ofextreme events constitute an additional burden to rural communities already living in poverty.
