Information technology advances (software and hardware) have impacted Automation, Instrumentation and controls in a big way. The amount of information available in the control room is huge. The advances available are huge and in some contrarian way, we are still using primitive sounds (sounds with a certain frequency) to communicate. This presents us with an unique opportunity to analyze this information in newer ways and communicate better. We move from informing to mentoring the operators. Starting with simple Alarm rationalization tools, the paper provides an insight to presenting the information differently and moves from informing the operator to guiding the operator. Thereafter, the focus is shifted from Alarms driven by parameters to a focus on the plant SOP's and their triggers and actions to be performed. These form the basis of an Operator Mentoring Systems (OMS). Other advancements possible are also discussed. The OMS concept assures consistent operations, reduced operator stress, mentoring of operator to achieve more and perform more advanced or complex tasks where possible.
