ASCE Visits the Panama Canal in 1994: Next Will Be the Panama Canal Centennial (1914-2014)

In April 1994, more than twenty members, including the Officers, and spouses of the ASCE Board of Direction toured the Panama Canal and were hosted for a large luncheon at the Panama Canal Administrator's residence during the 80th Canal Anniversary Year (1914-1994). Both authors have 1994 Canal tour photos to be scanned for the history session. Other information from the Panama Canal web site will show the recent construction and other activities associated with the complete 21st Century design for the much bigger ships and larger volume of traffic. A third parallel lock system for larger ships was under construction in 2009 to be completed in 2014. This slide presentation will outline some of the history of the Panama Canal, with more presentations to come as we approach the Panama Canal Centennial (1914-2014). The five people with prominent leadership in the Panama Canal were U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (2001-2008), Chief Sanitary Officer Dr. William C. Gorgas (1904-1914), Major (1906-1909)(Lt. Col. 1909-1913) David du Bose Gaillard (Engineer Supervisor for the Culebra Cut), Chief Engineer John F. Stevens (1905-1907) and Chief Engineer Col. George W. Goethals (1907-1914).
