Marathon Oil Corporation“The Detroit Heavy Oil Upgrade Project”

Marathon Oil Corporation recognizes that it is a privilege to do business in a community,and that we must operate in a manner that respects the citizens and the environment. Therefore,stakeholder engagement is an integral part of Marathon’s Corporate Social Responsibilityprogram. On June 20, 2008, the Department of Environmental Quality approved the air permitfor the Marathon Detroit Refinery Heavy Oil Upgrade Project, a $2.2 billion refinery expansionproject following extensive stakeholder outreach efforts by the company. Marathon’s DetroitHOUP stakeholder engagement effort included, in part, five open houses to allow facetofacecommunication with the community and regulators and development of a voluntaryEnvironmental Justice Analysis. As a result, issues were clarified and environmental solutionswere identified, which were incorporated into the air permit and numerous communityagreements. These conditions and commitments go beyond the regulatory requirements andinclude in part: ambient air monitors; Detroit Public School bus particulate matter controls;publicstreetsweeping; and continued information sharing with the community.
