In-situ Eddy Current Detection Cracks in Aeroengine Blades by Uniform Eddy Current Probe

Cracks often arise in aeroengine blades, which endanger flight security. Nondestructive testing must be carried out for the blades periodically during aeroengine working time. In this paper, eddy current testing of aeroengine blades in-situ was conducted using a uniform eddy current probe. The uniform eddy current probe comprised of an exciting tangential coil and a detecting pancake coil was designed. A 3D finite element model was used to simulate electromagnetic induction between the blade and uniform eddy current probe. By analysis of the induced voltage of the detecting pancake coil, crack size was achieved. A blade containing manufactured cracks was detected using the uniform eddy current probe. The experimental results are accordant with theoretic analysis and have good compatibility of the waves obtained with practical cracks. This method would be valuable for aeroengine blades practical application.
