Water as resources is under relentless pressure due to population growth, rapid urbanization. And changing life styles. The rate of increase of global water use has increased remarkably. As population increases, protecting water supplies from pollutants will become a major challenge. Compared to minor irrigation wastage of water in major and medium schemes is much more both due to conveyance losses as well as poor on farm water use practices. Improving efficiency of use of water for irrigation will result in substantial saving of water. A growing body of scientific opinion predicts a continued global climate change with regional imbalances during the current . These climate changes are likely to affect water availability, water demands and water quality which will have ramifications for the decision makers. A permanent long term solution to drought problem may be found in the basic principles of transfer of water from surplus river basins to areas of deficit. Artificial recharge is applied under a variety of climatic and environmental conditions. Traditional designs which need small investment with ease of maintenance are sustainable and therefore, are to be preferred. A holistic approach of watershed management is needed for not only building up the natural resources such as s oil, water and vegetation but also increasing production of food and fodder which eventually helps in sustainable development.
