The extraction of iron(III) from aqueous solutions containing hydrochloric acid and/or lithium chloride has been carried out using dihexyl sulphoxide (DHSO, R_2SO) in benzene. The organic extracts were examined by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopies. As a result, it was found that the distribution coefficient rises with increasing chloride ion concentration in the aqueous solution, and that the extraction equilibrium of iron(III) from hydrochloric acid solutions by DHSO can be expressed as: FeCl_3(aq) + HCl(aq) + 2R_2SO(org) → HFeCl_4.2R_2SO(org).
