This paper describes the application of the theory of human factors to develop a framework for studying the working environment of a ship's bridge. In this paper, an overview of the current status of human error assessment in ship operations is briefly described. A human error model is introduced. The role of human factors in maritime safety is investigated and a practical framework for classifying human error is developed. This paper presents a quantitative analysis approach for studying human error in ship operations. It also investigates the effectiveness of various alternative ways of reducing incidences and effects of human error. Furthermore, this paper also briefly discusses simulator-based training for seafarers with respect to the reduction of human error.
