The use of chlorine as a component of the fluxing gas in the degassing of liquid aluminum usually results in the formation of molten salts in the melt that compromise the performance of downstream filtration system and results in the sporadic release of salt/oxide inclusion agglomerates. Currently there are no commercial techniques available to detect liquid salts in molten aluminum on a real time basis. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a real time molten salt probe that detects the presence of liquid salts in molten aluminum. The theory behind the development of the probe is discussed as well as the evaluation of the probes in experimental and production environments.
