Lignins are widely available polymer sources which have been shown to be suitable for the controlled release of bioactive agents, e.g. pesticides, from biodegradable formulations prepared therefrom. The first kraft ligninpesticide matrix type controlled-release (CR) formulation has been invented at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) more than 2 decades ago. This type of formulation can be prepared either by direct mixing of the alkali lignin with the pesticide under melt conditions (fusion technique) or by using a solvent in which both are compatible. Kraft lignin when mixed in the melt state with compatible pesticides forms a glassy matrix on cooling. This matrix contains lignin solvated by the solvent pesticide and possibly unchanged kraft lignin in an adhesive composite.
