Although oil spills are becoming increasingly common, few geochemical studies have investigated in detail the production and fate of methane (CH_4), one of the products of the biodegradation of oil. We investigated the CH_4 geochemistry of a site near Bemidji, Minnesota, where crude oil from a pipeline break floats on the water table in a shallow sand and gravel aquifer (Fig. 1).
