University of Kentucky, Center for Applied Energy Research (UKy-CAER) has been working on resolving the technical challenges which for decades have been faced for the application of chemical looping combustion to solid fuel, i.e., the development of high-performance, cost-effective (less than $500/ton) oxygen carriers (OC), coal feeding and the process development for solid-fueled chemical looping combustion/gasification. Recently, the UKy-CAER successfully constructed, commissioned and operated a 50 kWth dual-reactor CLC pilot plant using the ilmenite and bauxite red mud as oxygen carriers. The pilot plant includes a uniquely designed multi-zone spouted bed fuel reactor, incorporating aspects from both bubbling and circulating fluidized bed reactors, in addition to features that enhance gas distribution and solids agitation. The turbulence minimizes axial and radial temperature and concentration gradients, promoting fast pyrolysis, tar cracking and preventing particle agglomeration.
