Managing Gas and Electric Power Network Dependencies to secure Energy Supply: Application to the UK System

The availability of natural gas plays an important role in electricity network, which employs gas-turbine-driven power generation. It influences not only the generation unit commitment, but also the costs of operations and the reliability of the network. In the event of power system faults, gas-operated units can be started up relatively fast in comparison to nuclear- and coal-fired plants, thus responding quickly to potential shortages or contingencies and preventing loss of stability and blackouts. For this reason, natural gas delivery must be reliable and adequate.
