Vibration in offshore platforms cause a variety of complications, ranging from minor discomfort to major health hazard, to crew on-board and may even lead to structural collapse of the platform if left unattended. The breakage of ice against the legs is a major source of vibration in the deep sea. This paper proposes a real-time microprocessor based system to effectively monitor the ice formation, and hence the vibration level along the legs of the platform. The proposed system composed of underwater wireless sensor network, a central processing server and multiple clients. The sensor network is primarily prototyped using a combination of Raspberry Pi and Arduino platforms to send vibration data and stream images, collected from discrete points along the leg, to the central server. The clients access the processed information through a central server. The architecture supports the usage of multiple clients (devices), an application was developed to obtain the vibration results and visual streaming. The proposed low cost system provides an accurate approach for vibration monitoring as less humans will be involved in offshore platforms monitoring.
