Green Sand 'Less is Best' a More Sustainable Philosophy for Change

Approximately 70% of the world's output of iron castings is produced using the greensand process. Over the last 50 years, high pressure molding and advanced manufacturing technology has dramatically increase production rates and reduced man-hours per tonne. However, while automation has significantly improved sand control and casting quality, the industry has not significantly changed its view of raw materials and the parameters commonly used to assess them. This paper questions our geographically based preconceived idea of "ideal Green Sand properties" and the global contradictions, which result. It becomes clear through the detailed high temperature evaluation of the common raw materials, that by concentrating on raw material thermal stability, it is possible to significantly reduce raw material consumption within the sand system, and harmful benzene and toluene emissions, while simultaneously improving mold face stability and "As Cast Quality".
