Waiting for the Bus ?! Discussion of the Opportunity to Define a New Access Network System Internal Interface

Within EURESCOM P413 Optical Networking project, a task dealing with the access network has been performed. It was dealing with assessments of services, architectures and cost comparizons between several technical alternatives. Within the project, the evaluations showed that conclusions might be very different when considering different scenarios for both services and regulatory issues. Therefore technical investigations proposed to consider means to be compatible with different transmission technologies, in order to minimize the number of building blocks specific to each solution, and in that way provide insurance of the best reusability of the investments done on early temporary solutions. The aim of this paper is to open a discussion on the opportunity to define a system internal interface, able to integrate the hereabove mentionned alternate solutions.
