The use of rigid rod pedicle screw fixation (PSF) systems for lumbar interbody fusion remains a common course of treatment for such spinal conditions as spina! stenosis, disc degeneration, and spondylolisthesis.[l-8] The rigid rod PSF system aims to decompress the neural elements and provide stability to the spine by minimizing motion at the treatment level. [1-2] While the success rate of fusion with rigid rod PSF systems has been reported to be over 95%, it is at the expense of potentially degenerating the discs and facet joints at the immediate adjacent levels and stress-shielding the bone at the treatment level.[3-5]
