Bus companies need to count passengers in order to submit an annual transport report to the local transport bureau or revise a bus route. Today, they use an infrared sensor or hire part-timers to count passengers. However, the use of an infrared sensor can lead to errors. In addition, it is quite costly to hire part-timers to cover all the routes or operations to count passengers. In recent years, an image-based passenger counter is available, but it has not been well-received because it is only capable of counting passengers. In order to solve such a challenge, Yazaki Energy Systems Cooperation (hereafter called Yazaki) has established the technology to count passengers based on the images collected by the drive recorder installed on the bus. The technology results in not only a reduction in cost but also significant improvement in the capabilities of the drive recorder. Furthermore, the technology allows the sharing of the data with the GPS information of the drive recorder, and provides useful data when reviewing or revising a bus route.
