This work presents the findings of a recent study for a large public sector educationalbuilding program on how project costs are impacted by green/sustainable building requirements thathave been included in the design and construction of the facilities. The study examines the correlationbetween the use of green/sustainable measures included on the project and cost measures such astotal project cost, construction cost, design costs, and construction change order cost. Based on datafrom over 30 large, public sector, educational building program projects which started constructionover the last 4 years, this paper makes the surprising discovery of little cost impact when implementingthese green/sustainable measures. Conclusions to the paper include suggestions for expansion of theresearch/lessons learned, as well as future research of factors that may influence project cost andgreen/sustainable construction.
